Robert Burns's ScotlandStonehavenStonehaven was the sole substantial port of Kincardineshire, close to the great castle of Dunnottar on its rock promontory above the North Sea, seat of the Earls Marischal. After the 1715 uprising in which the last Earl Marischal joined the Jacobites, Dunnottar was dismantled and remains a ruin to this day, though his red stone warehouse beside the harbour of Stonehaven has been restored as a museum. Robert Burness, grandfather of Robert Burns, had been employed in the gardens of Dunnottar, but after the downfall of its proprietor he took lease of the farm of Clochanhill, where his son William was born. Robert Burns travels to Stonehaven during his third tour to discover his heritage. |
